Session 1 – Voice vs Fear

Tuesday 12 May 7pm-9:30pm (GMT)

In this session we'll look at digging into your authentic voice and igniting passion on the page. We'll explore the tools you'll need to have a regular writing practice; overcoming fear, blocks and procrastination and finding weird ways in to unlock your creativity.

Session 2- Characters with Depth

Tuesday 19 May 7pm-9:30pm (GMT)

We'll explore how to craft characters that leap off the page and stay with your audience. We'll use exercises that build from the inside out and vice versa to discover tips and tricks to make characters feel alive and kicking.

Session 3. Structure, Surprises and Twists

Tuesday 26 May 7pm-9:30pm (GMT)

We'll cover some structure fundamentals then move on to the fun stuff; crafting your story like a rollercoaster and ways to add in twists, surprise and delightful plot turns.

There will then be a writing break for a week.

Session 4. Dialogue and Exposition

Tuesday 9 June 7pm-9:30pm (GMT)

In this session we'll explore all the facets of storytelling that make up exposition including world building and action. We'll also explore how to craft dialogue that's engaging and vivid.

Session 5. Script Surgery

Tuesday 16 June 7pm-9:30pm (GMT)

The final session is your chance to request topics to be covered and ask questions on any aspect of craft or navigating the industry. There will also be time to reflect on where you go next with your writing and a create a plan to move you forward whether that's tackling notes, redrafting or pitching.

Bea Roberts

Bea Roberts is a multi-award winning playwright and screenwriter from the West Country. Her play And Then Come The Nightjars won the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award and made her a Finalist for the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Bea then adapted her play into a feature film with director Paul Robinson. The movie won Best Independent Film at the Chichester International Film Festival and was picked as one of Rolling Stone UK's Top 23 Films of 2023.

Her one-woman/no-woman show Infinity Pool: A modern re-telling of Madame Bovary had a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival, was nominated for a Total Theatre award and was optioned by Hartswood Films.

Bea's modern feminist adaptation of Little Mermaid won Best Play for Children & Young People at the 2018 UK Theatre Awards. Bea has also written for the National Theatre, the Royal Court, the Young Vic and most recently, Ivy Tiller; Vicar's Daughter, Squirrel Killer starring Fleabag's Jenny Rainsford for the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2023, Bea was shortlisted for the George Devine Playwriting Award. Upcoming; Bea is writing the stage adaptation of Max Porter's award winning novel LANNY for Bristol Old Vic Theatre.

Bea was part of the BBC Writers' Academy 2022-23. She now writes for BBC's EastEnders and is developing screen work with Terror Arcade and Cariad Productions, Firebird Pictures, Hartswood Films and BBC Studios.
