The Romantic century is encapsulated in three works inspired by landscape, native folk music, literature, history and travels abroad.
Mendelssohn was captivated by Scotland – his soulful, windswept, high-spirited Symphony is the ultimate souvenir from his travels there. Dvořák's wonderful Concerto is alive with the melodies and rhythms of his native Bohemia, a homesick love letter to his homeland in sound written from a distant New York.
The inner turmoil of the Roman emperor Coriolanus is captured in Beethoven's strikingly dramatic overture to a play.
The Orchestra's young British music director, Alpesh Chauhan, is making waves with his elegantly shaped, clear-sighted interpretations and in soloist Johannes Moser, finds a kindred spirit in navigating Dvořák's expansive vistas. Moser has been hailed by Gramophone magazine as "one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists".
