100 years since its premiere in January 1927, Fritz Lang's silent film Metropolis remains one of cinema's most visionary achievements. Lang imagined a Utopian city where the wealthy live in luxury, powered by oppressed workers operating huge machines underground. With a vast budget, 36,000 extras and 20,000 costumes, plus an orchestral score that helped shape the sound of Hollywood, Metropolis is one of the most iconic and influential sci-fi films ever made.

For the film's centenary, a new live-orchestra version of Gottfried Huppertz's original symphonic score has been meticulously prepared by silent film expert Hans Brandner and Covent Garden Sinfonia's Artistic Director, Ben Palmer, one of the world's most sought-after specialists in conducting live-to-picture.
