The Battersea Jazz Festival is delighted to be welcoming a true living legend, Scott Hamilton, to St Mary’s Battersea for an unforgettable evening celebrating the music of John Lewis, Milt Jackson, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. Alongside internationally-renowned vibraphonist Nat Steele, the two will present music from their new album: “Afternoon in Paris: The Music of John Lewis and the MJQ” on Sunday 7th June.

Doors open at 6pm, and the performance will begin at 7pm.

Lineup: Scott Hamilton—Tenor Sax, Nat Steele—Vibraphone, Matyas Gayer—Piano, Dave Green—Double Bass, Steve Brown—Drums

Scott Hamilton is a true living legend and one of the all time great American Tenor Saxophone players. His big, warm, golden saxophone tone and perfect sense of swing carries on the tradition of the classic jazz tenor masters in the style of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins as well as Zoot Sims and Don Byas. He has performed alongside the likes of Benny Goodman, Tommy Flanagan, Milt Jackson, Gene Harris, Rosemary Clooney, Al Cohn, Ruby Braff, Charlie Byrd and countless others in a career spanning 50 years.

This performance will feature music composed by the great pianist John Lewis as part of his collaborations with Milt Jackson’s Modern Jazz Quartet in the second half of the 20th Century. Scott worked regularly with both Lewis and Jackson, as did the bassist for this evening’s gig, the one and only Dave Green.

Nat Steele is a London-based jazz vibraphonist renowned for his swinging, straight-ahead style, deeply influenced by legends like Milt Jackson. One of the finest vibes players alive today, Nat’s dedication to melodic improvisation and his two-mallet technique have earned him critical acclaim.

Nat and Scott will be backed by a fantastic trio featuring Hungarian pianist Matyas Gayer, Dave Green, one of British jazz’s most storied bassists, and the ever-swinging Steve Brown on drums. These three musicians have toured the world with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Sonny Rollins, Barry Harris, Coleman Hawkins, Eddie Henderson, and countless others.
