The pulse of every play lies in language: it shapes a play's atmosphere, creates rhythm, paints pictures, and, through linguistic and poetic cues, inspires the theatre-makers working to bring the play to life. Language, from its most everyday use to the most lyrical, gives us access to interior worlds, and renders the stage a poetic space. How can writers become more sensitive to language, and harness it more effectively and intentionally in their plays? Led by playwright Joel Tan (Scenes from a Repatriation), this workshop will take participants through writing exercises that focus on elements like rhythm, metaphor, sound, and diction, discovering the ways attention to language can help shape and deepen other areas of playwriting like character, narrative, and theatricality.
